Baby Mama (2008)
This movie was more of chick flick than I had expected to be, and it actually takes quite a serious twist half way through; all that said, this film is really funny. In Baby Mama, Tina Fey is trying to juggle her career with her desire to have children, and so decided to accomplish this using a hired surrogate, Amy Poehler. The film is not drop dead hilarious like you would expect a Seth Roegen movie to be, but it is really creative, and had me laughing almost the entire time. The cast of Baby Mama is unrealistically amazing. Aside from Fey and Poehler, the movie also includes classic stars like Steve Martin, Sigourney Weaver and Gregg Kinnear. On top of that, the film boasts several younger stars, including multiple current SNL cast member and Dax from the original Punk'd. No one in the film is going to win an Oscar, but everyone does a very good, believable job. About halfway through Baby Mama, we are hit with a very unexpected revelation that makes film take a very serious and relatively depressing turn. I give Baby Mama credit for not giving in and becoming a typical romantic comedy, but I will say that ending of the film does get wrapped up a little more neatly than is realistic. That said, the writing by Tina Fey is terrific, and the chemistry between her and Poehler is amazing. My wife watched Baby Mama with me, and while she found the depressing twist a little difficult to handle, she really liked it. I would say this film falls somewhere in between a typical romantic comedy and a slap-stick humor like Old School, and is actually really enjoyable. If I get the chance, I will probably watch it again. I give Baby Mama 3 stars.
