White Christmas (1954)

I had never seen this film until I met my wife, but since it is one of her holiday favorites, I have since watched it every Christmas that we have been together. In White Christmas, the successful song-and-dance team of Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye become romantically involved with Rosemary Clooney and Vera Ellen, a sister-act, and team up to save the failing inn of their former army commander. In terms of classic Christmas films, especially musicals, I have to say that this is one of the best. It is no It's A Wonderful Life, but then again, George Bailey cannot sing like Bing Crosby. White Christmas is a holiday favorite that is built around the fact that Crosby and Clooney both have amazing voices, and that Danny Kaye and Vera Ellen are both excellent dancers. It is not the type of movie that would be successful today, but within its genre, White Christmas is one of the best. Most of the songs in this film are not the traditional classics most people are used to, but the voices of these crooners are amazing. It is not always easy to use music and lyrics to further the plot, but this film does it perfectly, and while it does seem odd that people are singing for no reason, it is really enjoyable. Additionally, it does not get much better than when Bing Crosby sings White Christmas. The plot is corny, and more than a little predictable, but that's not what this movie is about. Great singing and feeling good around the holiday's are the goals of this film, and it does an excellent job in achieving them. It took me 22 years and a woman to finally watch this movie, but I am glad that I did. Needless to say, my wife loves Bing and the crew, and I look forward to seeing them again next holiday season. I give White Christmas 3 stars.
