The Original Pierre Maspero's
Eating in the French Quarter can be a bit of a challenge if you are looking to spend less than $50 but want something more than a Lucky Dog. The Original Pierre Maspero's offers a little something in between and as an added bonus, the building has tons of history and ambiance. The Maspero's is located on the site where Andrew Jackson and Jean Lafitte planned the Battle of New Orleans, and was also the home of the Old Slave Exchange, and is in a perfect location to enjoy the Quarter. The staff is courteous and helpful, and the building itself, while not spotless is not overly dirty. It is exactly what you would expect from a mid-priced restaurant downtown. The menu offers the New Orleans standards, overstuffed po'boys, gumbo and jambalaya. Some highlights include a bar-b-cue shrimp po'boy and an Cajun burger (a combination ground beef and sausage). Most of the entrees are served with french fries, which as far as I can recall, are some of the best in town. Several appetizers and desserts round out a very diverse menu. Along with offering breakfast prior to 11 am, Maspero's has a full bar including a few specialty cocktails. I was impressed by the quality of the food and prices as compared to other similar restaurants in the Quarter, where things can quickly become expensive. The restaurant does have children's plates, but they are not featured on their menu; the servers told them to us when we sat down, and they do have highchairs making it a family friendly restaurant. All and all, we enjoyed our visit to Maspero's, and I would eagerly recommend it to anyone looking for a casual sit down meal while in the French Quarter. I give The Original Pierre Maspero's 2 and half stars.
