Casamento's Restaurant
My husband and I first heard about this restaurant while watching an episode of Diners, Drive-ins and Dives on the Food Network with Guy Fieri. Immediately intrigued, we had to find out what the story is with Casamento's. To our chagrin, it turns out that we drive by this petite diner on a regular basis, in fact, we live on the same street. The first opportunity that presented, we rushed to Casamento's with high expectations, all of which were exceeded. The menu is neither long nor diverse; the restaurant knows what its strengths are and plays them up. Fried seafood is definitely the house specialty, and makes up 95% of their options. I ordered the fried oyster loaf, and my husband, the fried shrimp loaf. Unlike the classic po'boy, their sandwiches are served on slices of thick, buttered, toasted white bread, a soft, delicious background to the perfectly fried flavors of the seafood. We both quickly agreed that these loaves were the best fried seafood sandwiches that we have had to date. Other menu highlights include a soft shell crab loaf, various seafood dinner platters and a variety of soups. Chicken tenders and a grilled cheese round out the menu, and offer a few choices for younger diners. As any good oyster house offers, oysters on the half shell can be ordered by the dozen and half dozen all day long. From the second you enter Casamento's, you are greeted by a staff that is both friendly and eager to please. The dining area is clean and simple, but is not overwhelming or even particularly noteworthy. For a restaurant in the Uptown area of this style, it has ample seating. The prices are fair, but it should be noted that credit cards are not accepted. Of importance to us, Casamento's has a few high chairs and a staff that is kid friendly and were more than happy to interacted with our daughter in an appropriate way. My husband and I are extremely happy to have found this restaurant, and will be adding it to our list of regular lunch spots. I thank Guy Fieri for helping us find the best fried seafood loaves in the city. I give Casamento's 3 and a half stars.
