Balls of Fury (2007)
This movie is ridiculous, stupid and hilarious all at the same time. In Balls of Fury, former child ping-pong prodigy Randy Daytona is sucked into a dangerous tournament to the death, involving an evil Christopher Walkin and ghosts from his past. If you liked films like Beerfest and Reno 911!, you will probably enjoy Balls of Fury. While this movie is not going to win any awards, other than perhaps a Razzie, it is actually really funny and really enjoyable to watch. I went in with the understanding that I was going to see a mediocre, slap-stick comedy with little depth or development, so I was not disappointed. Instead, I was rewarded with a genuinely funny film including a few moments of real creativity and intelligent writing. The cast of this movie does a really good job of getting into this type of comedy. Christoper Walkin is hilarious, and displays an amazing amount of versatility in portraying the evil Feng. The rest of the cast is comprised of recognizable, but non-household faces, including Aisha Tyler, George Lopez, Patton Oswalt and Masi Oka. This group was well cast; there is not one actor who does not perform admirably, and is in perfect keeping with the mood of the film. The plot of Balls of Fury is weak and unbelievable, but there is no pretense otherwise. I am trying to think of something bad to say about Balls of Fury, but other than the fact that it is kind of stupid, I have nothing negative to say. There is a large population in this country that will hate this movie, but those people are probably aware of that already. If you like easy comedy based on people getting hit in the face with things, you will enjoy this film. My wife did not watch this movie with me; she would not have hated it, nonetheless she was not interested. If someone wanted to bring over some pot and watch this movie with me again, I would be game. I give Balls of Fury 2 and a half stars.
