The Contender (2000)

The Contender is the perfect movie for anytone that does not like George Bush and wants to see a film that figured it out eight years ago. This movie is about Jeff Bridges, the president's, attempt to make Joan Allen the first female vice president of the United States, and Gary Olman's attempt to stop it. This is one of the best written political movies I have ever seen. The story is phenomenal and the dialogue is amazing. I loved this movie. Joan Allen is a phenomenal actress, which actually makes it all the more disappointing that she is currently in that idiotic movie Death Race with another good actor, Jason Statham. Nonetheless, she is terrific in this movie. Long lost Christian Slater plays a key role in this film, something he has not done much of recently, and is spot on. If he would try a little harder to keep it together, he could still have an amazing career. After Hillary's attempt to become the first female nominee of a major political party, I found this movie all the more poignant. If you are a staunch Republican, there is a chance that you would not enjoy certain aspects of this movie, although I know many who have seen and loved it. Other than that, I cannot imagine anyone who would dislike the Contender. Jeff Bridges speech at the end of the movie is one of the best that I have ever heard. Also, take note how frequently he orders food, and notice the subtle symbolism of what he orders. My wife watched with me, and she seemed to enjoy it, although not as much as I did. I give the Contender 4 and a half stars.
