Little Miss Sunshine (2006)
This is one of the best movies that I have ever seen; I highly recommend it. A semi-dysfunctional family travels across the country in a failing VW van in order to allow the daughter to compete in California's Little Miss Sunshine pagent. I would elaborate further on the plot, but I could never forgive myself if I ruined some of the amazing moments in this film for anyone who has not yet seen it. Greg Kinnear and Toni Collette are amazing as the struggling parents trying to keep their lives from tumbling out of control. Steve Carell's performance as the brooding brother-in-law is an incredible, very out of character performance. Abigail Breslin and Paul Dano were perfectly cast as the family's children, and Alan Arkin turns in an Oscar winning performance as the grandfather. I am aware that Crash was not filmed too long before Little Miss Sunshine, but I cannot remember a more perfectly casted movie since Crash; it is no surprise that both films won the Best Picture Oscar. The film is billed as a comedy, but that is slightly misleading. The humor in this movie is about as dark as it gets, and while it is very funny, at times at least, Little Miss Sunshine is also amazingly sad. I am not gonna' say the first hour of this movie is a little slow, because it isn't; the pace of the first half amplifies how amazing the second half of this film is, and builds a lot of momentum for the end. It has been a long time since I have seen a movie that has a perfect finale, but Little Miss Sunshine does not fail to deliver. The end of this movie could not be better; there is nothing that could be changed to improve it. My wife loved this movie so much that since seeing it, we have purchased it for our personal library. Until now, I had not given a movie 5 stars, but that changes with this film. I give Little Miss Sunshine 5 stars.
