Dillinger (1973)
If you are interested in rooting for one of the greatest criminals in American history, Dillinger is your movie. This is the story of Melvin Purvis' pursuit of the infamous depression era bank robber John Dillinger. I found this movie quite enjoyable. The beginning of it was a little slow, I found myself having difficulty focusing, but about halfway through, this movie really grasped my attention. The second hour chronicles the dismantling of Dillinger's gang by the FBI, and it is definitely worth seeing. I thought this movie was well-written and well-acted, very good all the way around. Maybe I have not seen enough movies made in the '70s, but the only actor I recognized was the guy who played Ray on Dallas, as well as Ross Perot, I think, but I imagine they were not the only noteworthy players in the film. I am not sure about the historical accuracy of this movie, as I was not previously familiar with John Dillinger's story, but I found the movie quite educational. I was unaware that the gang had so many well-known criminals in it, such as George 'Babyface' Nelson and Charles 'Pretty Boy' Floyd, or of how Dillinger met his end. My wife had little interest, but she does not enjoy watching old movies for the first time nearly as much as I do. All things considered, I liked Dillinger a lot. Simply put, if you liked The Untouchables, I would definitely recommend that you see this movie. I give Dillinger 3 and a half stars.
