Ralph's on the Park
Located across from beautiful City Park, Ralph's is a delightful restaurant worth checking out. We went for brunch on Easter and enjoyed a wonderful meal with superior service in a elegant atmosphere. Like many brunches in this city, Ralph's offers a three course menu with a price that includes a starter, entree and dessert. Being a holiday, there were a few specials that we were able to choose from in addition to their traditional options. I ordered the turtle soup as a starter which was very good; it didn't blow my socks off, but it was solid. My husband ordered the corn and crab bisque which we thought was excellent. My father ordered the crab beignets, fresh Lake Pontchartrain crabmeat and housemade crab butter folded into a beignet batter, lightly fried, and served with a fresh ginger and lime dipping sauce. They were amazing; he gave me a taste, and I immediately regretted my turtle soup decision. My mother ordered the Baked Oysters Ralph, baked oysters on a bed of spinach topped with a creamy béchamel sauce enlivened with applewood smoked bacon, jalepenos, sweet peppers and tomatoes. My mother thought they were great; the oysters were well cooked and all of the flavors worked well together. For our main courses, we were not very adventurous. My mother and I both ordered the crab cakes and eggs. While the crab cakes were delicious, and I thought the poached eggs paired very well with them, I didn't really like was the sauce. It contained a lot of corn, and I found that the corn flavor overpowered the other elements of the dish. My husband and father both ordered the Crawfish Omelet, a three-egg folded omelet, stuffed with Breaux Bridge crawfish tails and roasted garlic, topped with pepper jack Mornay sauce, served with a buttermilk biscuit. They both thought is was great. I tasted a little of my husband's, and I am forced to agree. The Mornay sauce was spectacular, and the biscuit was incredibly rich and delicious. For dessert, my husband ordered vanilla ice cream, boring but tasty. I ordered the chocolate cake and it was heavenly. My mother ordered the strawberry shortcake which was recommended by our server, and apparently did not disappoint. My father ordered the chocolate pecan pie and his sentiments mirrored ours. Overall, everyone was very please with their meals. The service was also what you would expect from this type of restaurant, everyone was friendly and very attentive. I would not classify Ralph's as a kid friendly restaurant, but for a special occasion it is more than appropriate to bring your little one along. They even have a small children's menu with a few appetizing options. Prices are high, but that is to be expected. We really enjoyed our trip to Ralph's and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a nice place to enjoy a family brunch. I give Ralph's on the Park 4 stars.
