Casino Royale (2006)
Considering how mediocre the last few Bond movies have been, and how much flak the producers were getting for choosing Daniel Craig to be the next Bond, I was impressed at how good this installment was. Casino Royale chronicles James Bond's first mission as a double-O agent, involving an action packed series of events that give us an insight into how Bond came to be the spy that we have come to know and love. This movie is filled with car chases, guns fights, love scenes, everything we've come to expect from a classic Bond film. I feel like Daniel Craig does a really good job, and is more believable as Bond than some have been, including the later work turned in Pierce Brosnan. It is too early for me to say that I think Craig is better Bond than Brosnan, but I think that he is at least giving him a run for his money. After the first installment, I do not feel that Craig compares to Connery or Moore, but I certainly like him better than Timothy Dalton and George Lazenby; I think he has the potential, in time, to compete with the best. The plot of this film is actually pretty good, albeit a little hard to follow and the to understand. It shows James falling in love with a woman that he quickly loses, changing who he is forever. I thought the director did a good job of incorporating fast action and cool technology without overdoing it. I also appreciated the fact that they left out all of the mentally challenged puns the Bond series had gotten into the habit of making. GoldenEye was far and away the best Brosnan Bond film, but everything went down from there. I would put Casino Royale on the same plane as GoldenEye, and hope that the upcoming Bond ventures are more successful than the sequels starring Pierce. My wife liked the movie a lot, despite not being a huge James Bond fan. I have not yet seen Craig's second installment, but after seeing the first, I am guardedly optimistic. I give Casino Royale 3 stars.
