The Goonies (1985)

This is one of the timeless classics of my childhood, a movie that plays out one of every little boy's fantasies. In The Goonies, a group of kids set out on a treasure hunt that leads them through dimly lit caves, treacherous booby traps and pits them against a family of ruthless criminals. I think that as an adult, I enjoy this film even more than I did growing up in the '80s. Perhaps it is nostalgia, or just that I understand more of the humor, but whenever TBS airs The Goonies, I try to watch. The cast of this film is perfect. I do not know any little boy that did not want to try to create all the gadgets that Data whips out. The Truffle Shuffle is a timeless dance that can still be seen inflicted on chunkier members of fraternity pledge classes today. Sean Astin is terrific as the lead character, Mikey, and Josh Brolin's spot on portrayal of the older brother, Brand, always reminded me of my real life big brother. It would be unjust to review The Goonies without mentioning the one and only Corey Feldmen, who, with this film and Stand By Me, actually puts together a pretty decent film resume. Searching for buried pirate treasure, fighting bad guys and saving the day are things that all little kids dream about, which makes this movie perfect for kids of all ages. The classic '80s themes, retro humor and ridiculous clothes make it enjoyable today for any adult who lived through the big hair days. This movie is hilarious, and not meant to be particularly serious, but there are actually some moments of real creativity. The intricate booby traps and hidden clues are really quite clever and well thought out. It is a little silly to think that a massive pirate ship could be hidden on the American coast in a developed area, but that is beside the point. This movie is a classic, akin to films like The Princess Bride, movies that are still aired today on basic cable with some regularity; any minor plot shortcomings are beside the point and easily overlooked. My wife watched with me and has done so many times; just like every person that I have ever met, she likes The Goonies. It makes me happy that this movie is on TV with such regularity, and I look forward to introducing it to my daughter when she gets a little older. I give The Goonies 3 and a half stars.
