Deanie's Seafood Restaurant

The original Deanie's is located out in Bucktown, but the restaurant has expanded to the French Quarter, and that is the restaurant that my husband and I visited. The original owner opened Deanie's with the simple concept, "Great Food, Big Portions with moderate prices." This is still felt today at this family friendly establishment. Located conveniently one block off of Canal Street on the corner of Iberville and Dauphine, Deanie's a great location for both visitors and locals who want to go out in the Quarter after a great meal. The menu is chocked full of enticing seafood dishes, as well as a few options for land lovers. Highlights include oversized seafood platters, bar-b-que shrimp and several creative crab and crawfish dishes. When you get to your table, you are greet by a server bearing a bowl of small baked potatoes. The unique starters were wonderfully seasoned and are a fun alternative to the standard table bread. I ordered the stuffed crab dinner, which was prepared similar to a crabcake but backed within the shell itself. The presentation was beautiful and the dish tasted delicious. My only complaint is that instead of being served with a sauce, like a crabcake, it was served with a side of tarter sauce which I don't really feel goes well with crabs prepared this way. This lack left my dish feeling a bit dry. My husband ordered the softshell crab platter, which came with two softshell crabs that were cooked perfectly. Similar to my entree, his was served with tartar, and I feel that both dishes would have been benefited by a hollandaise or remoulade sauce of some kind. We were sitting near the kitchen and every dish that came out looked amazing. Deanie's does have a children's options, although they are not actually on the menu. We asked our server if they had one, and he rattled off a long list of kid friendly items. We ordered our daughter the cheese pizza, and other kids items included fried catfish, chicken fingers and fried shrimp. Deanie's can get crowded, but they offer a lovely bar area in which to wait, and even it is relatively kid appropriate. Another plus is that Deanie's has very clean restrooms, which can be a rare find in the Quarter. Deanie's really is a an interesting mix of family friendly and fine dining. The cleanliness and decor of Deanie's seems to exceed it's prices and style of food. This sort of hybrid restaurant is a great if you don't want to spend a lot of money but don't want to go to the more traditional whole in the wall restaurant found downtown. I give Deanie's 3 and a half stars.
