Road Trip (2000)

When this movie came out, I ranked it among the funniest movies that I had ever seen. As, I and cinema mature, it does not really compared to the new era of Will Ferrell/Vince Vaughn movies in terms timeless, classic comedy, but it is still highly entertaining. Road Trip tells the story of four friends who set off cross country to try to prevent the main character's girlfriend from watching the sex tape that he accidentally sent her. This movie is hilarious from start to finish. Seann William Scott of American Pie fame has the best role in this film. The role he plays is not dissimilar from his Stifler character, but I think he is even funnier in Road Trip. He portrays perfectly the frat boy perpetually looking to party, and as far as I am concerned, he is actually a pretty decent actor. Breckin Meyer plays the lead in this film, and he is alright, but he did not bring anything particularly special to this role. Amy Smart, who seemed at the time to be up and coming, is pretty decent in Road Trip, but it seems that her career has since fizzled, although I would not blame this film for that. Tom Green is in Road Trip, and is as annoying as ever, but he has a small enough role that it does not ruin an otherwise terrific film. A great performance in this movie was turned in by Paulo Costanzo, who also appeared in the short-lived NBC spin off Joey. I think he is a terrific actor with great, dry comic timing, and along with Stifler, make this movie hysterical. The plot of Road Trip is mildly unrealistic. Anyone who has ever traveled cross country knows that these types of adventures rarely turn out to be exciting, but that is not the point of this film. The movie is really funny, and a lot more creative and original than you might expect. There are a few classic lines from this film that I still quote today. In terms of the best comedies ever, this is not one of them, but I would say that in terms of great recent slapstick humor, this film is must a see and is highly underrated. I suppose it got overshadowed by the American Pie franchise, but for me, Road Trip takes the cake. My wife watched parts of the film with me, but she did not enjoy it. There is a lot of hilariously gratuitous nudity, which she is not particularly fond of. However, had she watched it back in 2000, I think she would have liked it. I look forward to seeing this movie again, but only if it is the unedited version. I give Road Trip 3 and a half stars.
