Bluebird Cafe
Addendum (May 30, 2009):
Unfortunately, as of May of '09, the Bluebird Cafe is no more. It seemed like it was in a good location, right in the heart of the Uptown medical district, but I guess it was not meant to be. I am not familiar with circumstances under which the Bluebird closed its doors, and while it was not our favorite breakfast joint, I think it is safe to say that it will be missed.
8/15/08:
The Bluebird Cafe is a great place to eat if you are interested in getting rid of last night's hangover, a great place to get a quick, home-style breakfast. A favorite of locals, the line for a table is out the door on weekends. During the week, you can hear the regulars chatting with the staff like old friends. While the menu does include multiple lunch options, the cafe is best known for its breakfasts. They serve everything a good breakfast hop should, with a variety of egg dishes, pancakes and waffles. Additionally, the restaurant also offers some finer breakfast options, such as Eggs Benedict and Steak and Eggs. While our meals were not the best breakfasts we have ever had, the food was more than adequate and was delivered quite promptly. My husband ordered the Big Bird Breakfast, and was pleased, although he did comment that the bacon could have been better and the biscuit was slightly overcooked. That said, this menu option came with eggs, meat, pancakes, biscuits and potatoes, everything my husband likes in a breakfast, and for a very reasonable price. I ordered the Bluebird Breakfast Muffin; scrambled eggs, bacon and cheese on an English muffin, a great meal and an excellent value at under five dollars. The restaurant interior is simple and reminiscent of a classic breakfast cafe. The service is not overly ambitious, but the staff is friendly and courteous, and we were never lacking. While there was no children's menu, the Bluebird has multiple high chairs and our daughter was well-received. As I mentioned, the bill did not break our bank, but be sure to bring cash; much like the Olympics, the Bluebird does not accept American Express. In fact, they do not accept any credit card. The restaurant is nothing spectacular, but it is a great place to eat if you want to get rid of the taste of last night's Bud Lights. I give the Bluebird Cafe 2 stars.
