Semi-Pro (2008)

Considering that I had not heard the greatest things about this film, compared to most recent Will Ferrell ventures, I was very pleasantly surprised. Jackie Moon of the ABA tries to rally his team in an attempt to make his NBA dreams come true. This film will definitely not make my top ten funniest films, but in terms of recent movies, I think it is one of the more amusing that I have seen. As in most Will Ferrell pictures, the cast of Semi-Pro is great, and adds a terrific amount of depth and character to the film. Woody Harrelson and Maura Tierney are both pretty good in the main side story, but the real genius is seen in the more peripheral characters. Rob Corddry, Tim Meadows, Andre Benjamin and David Koechner all play hilarious roles throughout the league that make Semi-Pro hysterical. I will say though, my favorite performances come from Will Arnett and Andrew Daly of Arrested Development and Eastbound & Down fame. They are the announcers, and are drop dead hilarious in a way reminiscent of Best in Show. As always, Will Ferrell controls the screen and has perfect comedic timing; he makes this film, and almost every film he is in, with the exception of Bewitched, worth watching. There is a lot of creative and original comedy in Semi-Pro that I really enjoyed. If ridiculous, over-the-top humor is not your kind of funny, this would be a poor choice of films for you. That said, if you are one of those people, you should have no illusions that you enjoy like Semi-Pro. If you liked any previous Will Ferrell movie, I think you will like this one. My wife and I both really liked the film, and much like most of Ferrell's works, I imagine this one gets funnier with each subsequent viewing; I will happily watch it again. I give Semi-Pro 3 stars.
