Scent of a Woman (1992)

While I cannot recall any other movies that I have seen that revolve around a blind man, I can definitively say this is the best movie about a blind person that I have ever seen. Chris O'Donnell agrees to watch over an aging war veteran, Al Pacino, during the Thanksgiving holiday, while trying to deal with his own problems at school. This is a great movie that I would recommend to anyone. There is a lot of foul language and 'adult content', but the one-liners in this movie are classic. Al Pacino's performance in this film is an amazing one. He delivers what might have been the best portrayal of his prolific career. His work is so good, that the idea that a person who can actually see is playing a blind man in no way cheapens this film. In fact, Jamie Foxx should have watched Scent of a Woman a few more times before he took on the challenge. Unfortunately for Chris O'Donnell, there is no other way of saying it; he sucks. The script of this movie is so good that even he could not ruin it, but he probably cost this movie the Best Picture Oscar. There is one problem, other than O'Donnell, that I have with this film, and in order to express it, I am going to spoil a major plot device, so do not read on if this is a problem for you. Throughout the film, Pacino is planning on killing himself, but when it comes down to it, O'Donnell is able to stop him. I found this to be slightly out of character for Scent of a Woman, and too fuzzy and predictable for me. That said, if he had not lived, he would not have been able to give his amazing speech at the end, a speech that is certainly the best part of this movie. M wife did not watch this one with me, but I know she would have enjoyed it. Next time it's on, I will watch it again. I give Scent of a Woman 4 stars.
