Leatherheads (2007)

If I had to choose one movie to describe the word mediocre, it would be this film. Set in the 1920s, Leatherheads is the story of an aging football player trying to salvage a career and create a forum within which his sport can thrive. It is not that this movie is bad, it is just that it is not particularly good. The cast is very respectable. As the lead, George Clooney does his typically excellent job, and finds the perfect sarcastic counterpart in John Krasinski (Jim from The Office). Renee Zellweger stars opposite Clooney, and while I am not a huge fan, she is less obnoxious in Leatherheads than I usually find her. The cast, however, is not the problem in this film, the story is simply not all that interesting or even enjoyable. Krasinski is the young war hero who brings in the crowds, while Clooney is slowly fading from the spotlight and slowly falling for Zellweger. The problem is that the ending of this movie is very ambiguous and not in any way satisfying. Things do not really work out too well for everyone, and since the film never did anything to make any of the characters unlikable, it makes you wonder what you just did with two hours. The cast does a good job keeping the film together, and there are some really funny moments, but overall, Leatherheads is not great. What's interesting is that Clooney's character is very similar to Ulysses in O Brother, which is hilarious, but Leatherheads falls far short, which almost makes it worse. My wife hated the movie, based solely on the ending, but I did not think it was that terrible. I am glad to have seen this film once, but would be very hesitant recommend it and will never sit through it again. I give Leatherheads 2 stars.
