Dave Chappelle: Killin' Them Softly (2000)
Anyone who was a fan of Dave's short lived sketch show on Comedy Central will love this one hour special; if you were not a fan, there is probably something wrong with you, and you will not enjoy Killin' Them Softly. Dave goes off for just under an hour on topics ranging from race, politics and drugs all the way to Sesame Street. This special is really heavy on foul language and inappropriate topics, and is definitely not watchable for an immature audience. With that out of the way, Killin' Them Softly is fucking hilarious. This special is kind of old and was done before the massive success of The Chappelle Show, so it really shows the kind of humor that Dave thrives on, and gives great insight into the kind of comedy that his show was going to add to the national stew. The one significant negative that I would say about Killin' Them Softly is that it was almost overwhelmingly thick with racial humor. All of it was funny, and he even has a few interesting and creative insights, but the first half an hour of the special are solely dedicated to race and the differences between white people and black people. Like I said, it is all hilarious, but it verges on becoming trite. If you do not enjoy those kinds of jokes, stay away from Killin' Them Softly, and Chappelle in general. If you like that kind of stuff, you will loves this show. Dave's funniest moments come in a set about Sesame Street that is absolutely hilarious and something that just about anyone would enjoy. I really liked this comedy special, and am hoping to see more of Chappelle's stuff soon. My wife is not a fan of Dave's comedy, so did not watch this with me. If you do not appreciate racial, incendiary or sexually-based jokes, you should skip this one, but I liked it. I give Dave Chappelle: Killin' Them Softly 3 stars.
