Brian Regan: The Epitome of Hyperbole (2008)

This is the first time that I have reviewed a comedy special, so it is hard for me to figure out exactly where to begin, but I'll give it my best shot. Simply put, Brian Regan is absolutely hysterical; this show is non-stop laughs. It actually comes as a pleasant surprise, because honestly, when Brian comes on stage, the first thought going through my head was that this guy kind of looks like a D-bag. After less than a minute though, I was hooked. Regan combines a lot of really intelligent insights and commentaries that are spot on with some hilarious physical comedy. Not all of his jokes are killers, but any time it looks like he might fall flat, he shows real comedic talent and pulls through with his own brand of off-beat facial expressions and awkwardly ridiculous poses. This show was definitely good enough to make me want to see more of Regan's work. At one point during The Epitome of Hyperbole, an audience member interrupts the show and if I am not mistaken, actually ruins the punch line of the joke. Regan handles it extremely well and does not miss a beat, but it is slightly disappointing in that the heckler ruins what seems like would have been a hilarious joke. Regan is full of energy and just about everything he does, even the way he walks, makes me laugh. One final thing of note about Regan's show, it is relatively family friendly. There were no jokes about sex or strings of profanity; this is the type of show that is appropriate for anyone around 12 years of age or older. As a forum, Comedy Central does a great job of presenting talented comedians to a broader audience. It has been my experience than when Comedy Central presents an hour long special, they rarely fail to deliver. I really enjoyed this show and look forward to seeing more of his work; I know my wife would have enjoyed the show, I can't imagine anyone not. I give Brian Regan: The Epitome of Hyperbole 3 and a half stars.
