Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee (2007)
This movie is great if you are feeling too good about being white. This is certainly one of the most depressing movies that I have seen recently. That said, Bury My Heart was terrific. As always, HBO has done a great job of dramatically portraying historical events while maintaining an excellent sense of posterity. The movie is very well written and extremely well acted. Sitting Bull is portrayed in a way that was at least new to me, in a way that I doubt many people are familiar with. He is seen as a fallible human leader of a civilization that is obviously fading, and is confronted with the impossible decision of whether to fight against the changes or embrace them, both of which will lead to the disappearance of the Sioux nation. This movie was actually quite educational, as well as captivating. It was, at times, a little slow. There is not a lot of action and it went about 30 minutes longer than was necessary, but the show was totally worth my time. I should point out that my wife had no interest in this movie at all, and would not have liked it. Nonetheless, I give Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee 3 and a half stars.
