The Devil Wears Prada (2006)

Apparently this book is a modern day must-read, and while I have no intention of doing it, I must admit that I found the movie pretty enjoyable. The Devil Wears Prada is the story of small-town journalism major who gets her first job out of college working for a high-powered fashion magazine under one of the most unforgiving bosses ever created. This movie is definitely a chick-flick, but the fact that is not another cookie-cutter romantic comedy alone makes it more worthwhile than your average Matthew McConaughey film. The cast of The Devil Wears Prada is phenomenal, and helps push this movie into the realm of decent cinema. Meryl Streep as 'the devil' is amazing. I am always impressed at how well she is able to reinvent herself and create a character that is one-hundrer percent credible. Anne Hathaway does a good job overcoming her 'princess' personalty and really captivates the audience as she experiences the highs and lows of the real world. My favorite performance in this film comes from Emily Blunt, who plays Streep's primary, hapless assistant. She is spot on hilarious and really shows a lot of personality and depth; the best lines in The Devil Wears Prada come from her. I guess what I like best about this film is that though it does delve into Anne's personal life and relationships, unlike most films made specifically for women, The Devil is not entirely about her love life. My wife saw this movie in the theaters when it came out, and was not all that impressed. Since then, I believe that we have both seen it on two occasions and subsequently enjoyed it. If I had to watch this film again, it would not be the end of the world, although I think twice was probably enough. I give The Devil Wears Prada 3 stars.
