Nim's Island (2008)
Considering that this is obviously a kid's movie, I found it more enjoyable than I had expected. In Nim's Island, a young girl finds herself alone on her island home when her father fails to return from a scientific mission on the high seas, and she soon becomes forced to defend her island as she searches for her dad. This film is a little bit ridiculous, and certainly requires a willing suspension of disbelief, but all things considered, it is a decent film. Abigail Breslin of Little Miss Sunshine fame plays the main character, and does so really well. Someone needs to teach her how to run like an adolescent, rather than a two year old, but aside from that, she is a fine actress given her age. Jodi Foster has a surprising, and kind of stupid part in this movie, but again, Nim's Island was not made to be enjoyed primarily by adults, and within that framework, her role is not all that annoying. The special effects, animals and scenery in this film are all pretty cool, something that I am sure catches the eye of most children. The film unrealistically wraps up quite neatly at the end, but Nim's Island is a movie that intentionally does not focus on believable story lines. I guess the main problem that I had was not the audience at which this film was directed, but that there was no great moment of conflict and resolution, no cool action scene (not even one geared toward kids). That said, I think if I was a little kid, I might have really liked this film and the idea behind it would have enchanted me. I do not foresee watching the movie again anytime soon, but when my daughter is old enough to enjoy it, I would gladly watch it with her again. I give Nim's Island 2 stars.
