I am not the type of man that categorically dislikes all romantic comedies, so I feel like my opinion in this case is valid; this movie was terrible. In Over Her Dead Body, the ghost of Eva Longoria tries to prevent her former fiance from moving on with another woman, who ironically is a psychic who can speak with the dead. There are a few redeeming qualities in this film, but none of them make it worth watching. Longoria does a serviceable but forgettable job as the female lead. This role was appropriate for her, but it failed to capture any of her sex appeal and for all practical purposes, just made her seem like a bitch. The psychic is played by Lake Bell, who actually has pretty good timing and was trying really hard to make this film enjoyable. Jason Biggs, of American Pie fame, plays a ridiculous, Pretty in Pink-esque role that contributes almost nothing to the film in a vain attempt to create depth. Paul Rudd plays the male lead, and while I will watch him in anything, his character was the biggest disappointment. I thought it impossible to make Rudd un-funny, but Over Her Dead Body's director succeeded. Rudd's facial expressions and timing are amongst the best in the business, and in this movie, they are completely wasted. The main reason I agreed to watch this film was to see Paul Rudd, and unfortunately, it was not worth the price of admission. The ending of Over Her Dead Body is not as predictable as one normally expects from a romantic comedy, but it does wrap up a little more neatly than is realistic. I watched the movie with my wife and her parents, and I feel like I can safely say that we all disliked it. The entire film is spent waiting for Longoria to do the right thing, but the audience is lost in the interim, since it is not particularly funny. When she finally does make the right decision, I had long since stopped caring. I like Paul Rudd and Lake Bell a lot, and will not hold this film against them, but there is not a single person on Earth that I would recommend this movie to. I give Over Her Dead Body 1 and a half stars.
