Squeal Bar-B-Q
New Orleans is not well known for its bar-be-cue but Squeal Bar-B-Q, located in the River Bend area, is one restaurant that knows how to deliver this southern classic with a New Orleans twist. My husband and I lived in Memphis for four years, so we both love good bar-be-que, and Squeal is the best I have had in the city thus far. My favorite thing to order at any bar-be-que shop is a pulled pork sandwich smothered in a great sauce. Squeal serves theirs up on french bread, po-boy style, as opposed to the more traditional bun or Texas toast. I enjoyed this New Orleans inspired twist, although it did make for quite a large sandwich and the bread slightly overpowers the pork. That said, the meat is nicely cooked and very moist. Their bar-be-que sauce is very good, it definitely has some New Orleans spice to it; nothing too powerful, just a nice kick in the back of your mouth. Aside from the pulled pork sandwich, Squeal offers everything you want from a bar-be-que joint: ribs, brisket, chicken, sausage and even a burger. You can order your entree as a sandwich or as a plate, and both are served with your choice of two sides, including roasted corn grits, corn maque choux, baked beans, collard greens, potato salad and coleslaw; you definitely get a lot of food for your money. Squeal also offers a few starters, salads and desserts to round out their menu. There is also a small children's menu and plenty of highchairs making this a family friendly restaurant for sure. The atmosphere feels very much like the food they serve, causal and down home. The staff is friendly and helpful but not the quickest in town. Prices are moderate but portions are large, so it is a good value for your dollar. Overall, I have enjoyed eating at Squeal and would go back in the future. The bar-be-que can't compare to most places in Memphis, but it holds its own in New Orleans. I give Squeal Bar-B-Q 3 stars.
