Hitman (2007)

If you are a fan of movies with pretty much non-stop action, and are not expecting something akin The Bourne Identity or Collateral, I think you will enjoy this film. In Hitman, agent 47 gets caught in a political conspiracy that pits him against his own agency, the international police force known as Interpol and the Russian intelligence agency. There is not a whole lot that is original about this film, in fact it distinctly reminded me of Shoot 'Em Up, but taken for what it is, I liked Hitman. Timothy Olyphant plays the hero, and does so quite admirably. While this role did not require him to flex his acting chops too much, anyone who is familiar with the HBO series Deadwood is aware of how solid Olyphant can be. The plot of this movie is pretty stereotypical. An assassin who is the best in the business gets set-up by his own company (something that is never explained) and sets out to make things right. A girl and a good-hearted cop get involved, and everything gets straightened out in the end. The film is predictable, and not particularly thought provoking or creative, but that does not mean that it is unpleasant to watch. If all you want to see for an hour in a half is some sweet, semi-realistic exploding fight scenes, you will love this film. For me, it was totally worth the time, and while I would not recommend Hitman to people like my wife, who let me watch this one alone, I would recommend it to people like my little brothers. This is the type of film that I would watch again if it was airing on something like FX, but that I will never actively seek out. I give Hitman 2 and a half stars.
