Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007)
I never thought I would find myself saying this, but unfortunately for Requiem, this film is not nearly as good as the original Alien vs. Predator. In Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem, warring alien species descend on a small town where the unsuspecting residents must try to figure out a way to survive. The original AVP was actually kind of an interesting story, where the humans help the Predator to defeat the mindless killing machine Aliens. That was my main problem with this film. At no point in Requiem does an insightful human realize that the Predator is not there to hurt them and join forces; I found it highly disappointing. Another problem I had with this film is the way it portrays the government's reaction to the problem. Instead of trying to aid the citizenry, they decide to abandon the town's people in an attempt to destroy all the aliens from afar. It is a plot line that takes no time to develop and makes very little sense. This film has a lot of problems that would take too much time to list, but I do have to comment on the cast. Considering how mediocre the movie is, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the acting was not actually all that bad. Aliens vs. Predator showcases some decent young actors that, while they are not recognizable now, may one day become familiar faces. AVP2 is not a very good movie, but it is not horrible. There are some really cool action scenes, but at certain times, the lighting is so poor that it is hard to understand what is going on and who is fighting whom. Any Alien or Predator movie has some intrinsic value, although the AVPs do no compare to the originals, but for me, it was worth watching to see the cool ETs alone. Had I asked her, my wife would have refused to watch this film, so I did not try. I cannot imagine ever watching AVP2 again, but if they make a third installment, I will probably see it. I give Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem 2 stars.
