27 Dresses (2007)

This was not the worst romantic comedy that I have ever seen, and it has a pretty impressive cast, but it is about as predictable as a movie can get. In 27 Dresses, Katherine Heigl epitomizes the 'always a bridesmaid never a bride' mantra. Her life becomes chaotic when her manipulative sister gets engaged to the boss she has been pining after for years. James Mardsen comes into the picture as a cynical wedding writer who tries to show Heigl that weddings are not all that they are cracked up to be. The plot of this movie is weak, it is mostly fluff, but the cast does a really good job. Heigl continues to show that she is a better actress than her ridiculous character on Gray's Anatomy. James Marsden appears to be an up and coming young actor, with this movie following on the success of the X-Men trilogy. I hope for his sake that he does not get pigeon-holed into these types of films, because he seems to be a pretty talented actor. The best performance comes from Edward Burns, who plays Heigl's boss. He is an amazing actor and is almost always hilarious, even if he is not trying to be. The story line of 27 Dresses is relatively weak, and the end of the film is so predictably gift-wrapped that I almost did not even need to finish it. There is one other redeeming quality to this film though, aside from the stellar cast. I would say that about four or five times throughout the movie, I found myself laughing out loud at a truly hilarious one-liner. The dialogue in the film is not spectacular, but there are a few moments that are truly inspired and really funny. My wife said that she liked this movie a lot, although I did not find her all that convincing. I like Katherine Heigl outside of that moronic TV show, so I am glad that I was able to see her doing something else, even if it was, at best, a mediocre film. I give 27 Dresses 2 stars.
