The Breakfast Club (1985)
It is hard to say if this is the best movie of a generation of actors, but it is certainly up there. The Breakfast Club is the story of five students stuck in detention on a Saturday morning who end up discovering different things about themselves and each other. This may be the penultimate Brat Pack movie. Molly Ringwald plays the popular prom queen pretty admirably, and Anthony Michael Hall turns in a typically great performance. Emilio Estevez comes off as kind of a tool, and more so than just his character requires. His performance is serviceable, but we have all seen him do better. The stars of this movie are Judd Nelson, who is hysterical in The Breakfast Club, and Ally Sheedy, for whom this is certainly her greatest accomplishment. This movie is a little bit indulgent, and the set up of five people being in detention from five different clicks in high school is kind of hard to believe, but it does not dampen the things in the film that verge on greatness. I have a hard time deciding whether or not this movie is better than Sixteen Candles and St. Elmo’s Fire, but it is certainly not worse. I had seen The Breakfast Club before, but never start to finish, and never uncut; this time, I really enjoyed it. Interestingly enough, my wife is not that big a fan of this movie, although she does enjoy the genre. I will most likely watch this movie again next time it comes on TBS; I give the Breakfast Club 3 and a half stars.
